I know that a lot of people would disagree, but I do believe that my dogs understand a lot of what I say. I had a dog once, a Lhasa Apso mix, who seemed to know the difference between "out" (when she would get really happy), and "bath" (when she would run for cover). I could even spell the words, and she would still know the difference. When she thought she was getting a bath, we had a hard time getting our hands on her. She would run under things, and act like a quarterback with a linebacker after her.

Exercising your pup when you can't go outside
I was just reading a blog a few minutes ago, and the question was, what do you do for exercise when you can't go out. I commented that you could let your dog do the same as you. We had a little dog who loved to get on the treadmill, and would walk for about five minutes, especially at a slow pace. I have a picture of her at www.cutedoggypics.com/gallery, and she loved it. She would not stay on it for long, but a few minutes of exercise is better than nothing, and since it kept her at a steady pace until she jumped off, it might have been better than just letting her meander which is what she tended to do on our walks.
If you have a treadmill, give it a try.
